Small Group
Small groups are created based on school and student need and are thus not consistent year to year or month to month. Students are chosen for small groups based on teacher/parent recommendation, my own observations, and, occasionally, student request. Here are some of the groups that have been run in the past:
Lunch bunch (Friendship building and school connection)
Personal Space Camp (Learning about and building "personal bubbles")
Superflex (Developing flexible thinking)
Friendship Group (Problem solving and peer connection)
Self Regulation (Calm down strategies)
Social Skills (Developing social skills strategies)
TTRPG Social Skills Group (think Dungeons & Dragons to practice problem solving)
If you have a concern about your student and feel they could benefit from a small group intervention, please let me know and we can discuss your concerns as well as what might be done to address them.
Individual
School counselors will often work individually with students in brief, solution focused counseling. Sometimes this is a brief problem solving session or two, a check-in/check-out system, or something more formalized for helping a student develop a skill they need in order to be successful at school.
After an individual counseling session in a school setting, the counselor may find the issue beyond their expertise and would then find the most appropriate next action is to refer the student to other support staff or to professionals not employed by the school. Though we cannot recommend providers, Newberg does have a list of people in the area to support you in your search for a therapist.
