Happy National School Counselor Week!
School counselor week is a week in the school year where we share out more about what school counselors do to help support students find success. At the elementary level, that can include many things, including:
Classroom lessons
Individual goal focused short term counseling
Small groups
Family support
Teacher support

Here at Mabel Rush, we have two school counselors: me, Jennifer DuPriest (full time), and Ron Hampton (part time). Our goal is to help all of our students feel seen and have a sense of belonging.
Social Emotional Learning Tip for Home

Managing emotions can be tough, especially BIG emotions in tiny humans! As adults, we can help by helping kids name their emotions. When a child doesn't have the vocabulary to name their emotion, sometimes using color zones can be helpful. At Mabel Rush, we use the Mood Meter to help kids identify how they are feeling.
Adults can model naming feelings to help manage emotions by narrating out loud how they are feeling and what they are doing to manage those feelings.
"I'm feeling frustrated that I spilled my coffee. I'm going to take some deep breaths while I clean it up." "I'm feeling a little nervous watching this movie. Maybe I'll hug a pillow so I can still watch without getting too scared."
